We caught up with Jeff Mariotte, author of the new novel trilogy Age of Conan: Marauders to find out a little about what its like to be working on the Conan license!

Here is what he aoc gold had to say when we asked what it meant to him to be part of the license team!

Age of Conan is more than just a game—it’s a multi-pronged effort by Conan Properties International and some talented creative partners to expand upon parts of Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age that Howard, during his too-brief career, didn’t have a chance to thoroughly explore. To be asked by CPI and Ace Books to become part of that process, by writing the first-ever young adult novels set in the Hyborian world, is an honor and a privilege for a long-time REH fan like me.

My trilogy is called Age of Conan: Marauders, and involves three young characters, two Aquilonians and a Pict, who find themselves thrown together by circumstance and must pit themselves against the dark and brutal Hyborian world. The first book, Ghost of the Wall, has just been released by Ace, with the next two scheduled for late March (Winds of the Wild Sea) and late May (Dawn of the Ice Bear).

On my website I wrote an essay about what Conan and the works of Robert E. Howard have meant to my life. You can find that essay here: Conan and Me . I also supplemented the essay with posts on my blog that expanded upon some of the topics it touched on. Those posts start here , and continue for about the next week. I post occasionally about Conan and REH-related things, so you may want to check back occasionally.

My great thanks to Funcom for giving me the opportunity to spread the word to Conan fans worldwide. We all love spending time in the Hyborian world, and Funcom’s new game will be an amazing way to make the experience real!

–Jeff Mariotte

Thanks to Jeff for taking the time out to talk to us about the books aoc gold and what Conan means to him!

You can find more information on the new books over at Conan.com, so make sure you drop by and keep an eye out for them at your local bookstore!

* Generally it means you have the freedom to kill whom ever you wish whenever you wish with your guild backing you up.

Question II: lawlz i l!ke to pwn ghey n00bs & grife them do u grife ghey n00bs?

Anything in character for a drunken barbarian (think Korgoth of Barbaria) is quite acceptable. Anything in character for a spineless pimply faced 11 year old fat boy with anger issues is not acceptable.

* Because contrary to popular belief, roleplay can be fun and hilarious in the right hands.

When we mention roleplay, we aren’t age of conan gold talking about attending in-game weddings, flirting with elven maidens or shooting magic missiles at evil wizards quoting Shakespeare. We are talking about running around like a pack of drunken, angry blood thirsty savages, humping, maiming or killing everything we feel like humping maiming or killing. Too serious for you? How about charging every scantily clad barbarian we see a loin cloth tax and killing them if they don’t pay up? The possibilities are endless.

* Not really, we aren’t a griefing guild… sure a lot of our actions in game will with out a doubt be construed as griefing but to us it is simply playing a part.

Question I: Why is the Herd on a RP-PVP sever and not straight up PVP?

We will be well known for mass murder though age of conan gold . During our Grazing events a few times each week, the entire guild will get on Ventrilo (preferably drunk) and we will stampede all over the face of Hyboria murderering anyone in our path who doesn’t join us or get down on their knees.

Question III: Join or Die, eh? Does that mean you are going to kill everyone on sight?

Level 80: Mirrored Iron 2/3 and 3/3. There’s not much left in the trees, and this *will* increase your AOE damage to some extent. don’t forget Protection of Set applies to party member too, so even if you’re not tanking mobs will still be reflecting on themselves. It’s only +20% damage per proc though, no proc chance increase unfortunately.

Level 70: Lore of Skelos 1/1. Nice damage increasing spell, you should get the most use out of this spell in PVP (stack it with pacts). For one point, there’s no reason not to pick this up, you can even use it to bring down mobs when you over aggro accidently. Remember to always use all the cooldowns you have available to you!

Level 54-57: Wicked Bolts 5/5. You need 5/5 to get our next amazing spell, and lets face it, who doesn’t want a huge knockback? It’s great in PVP (when it works), and every second counts when you knock back a melee mob.

Level 15-19: Natural Conductor 5/5. More damage is never bad.

Level 20-23: Overload 5/5. This is an amazing spell, age of conan gold and if you want to be a true AOE grinder, you need all the regen spells you can get. It’s especially useful when using high mana cost spells like SB and IoA. With 5/5 it procs a charge almost every single AoE cast.

Level 75-77: Tome of Erlik 3/3. Another burst damage talent, again mostly a PVP talent. Stacking this and Lore of Skelos can actually bring you up to par with the PVP damage of most other classes. And again, feel free to use them to bring down especially large or difficult pulls in PVE too.

Level 50: Overload Shockblast 2/3 and Wicked Bolts 1/5. If you don’t feel like putting a point in Quickened Iron you can save an extra point and get 3/3 Overload Shockblast this level. I don’t recommend not getting Wicked Bolt, it’s an entirely new spell, and an instant cast CC at that! It’s amazing for stopping casters or throwing in while waiting on SB to reduce damage taken.

Level 51: Overload Shockblast 3/3. The third point doubles the damage increase from this amazing talent, quite possibly the most important feat in an AOE build. While it sucks waiting a level to get it, overall, it’s just one level. Shockblast should really be tearing through mobs now, with the AOE root and wicked bolts that you also get at level 50, you’ll feel like a new class!

Level 29-32: Mage Blood 5/5. It’s time to start hitting the general tree, getting an awesome mana talent is just bonus.

Level 80: Agonizing Jolts 1/1. A mostly useless talent because the snare doesn’t kick in until the first tick of damage 2 seconds after you start channeling. It *does* not stop channeling in PVP based on range though, as far as I know, so if someone runs at extremely low health and happens to not use a pot, this might kill them. Channeling it then stopping when the first tick happens in PVE doesn’t do much, since you could just precast a Shockstrike and achieve the same mob HP when it reaches you. Pick it up earlier instead of 1 point in Bombardment if you want, in which case you’d finish Bombardment here.

Level 40-43: Rapid Recharge 5/5. There’s a bit of a grey area concerning the points in the next few levels. Basically you need to have 30 points in the tree by level 50, and you have 2 routes to choose from. Personally I never use Shockstrike for splash damage, so Discharge and Chained Shockstrike are worthless to me. You are perfectly welcome to pick them up if you prefer using Shockstrike in your AOE cycles or on mere 2 pulls though. With our mana talents though, you can use SB and IoA with impunity, there’s nothing stopping you from Shockblasting down just 2 mobs. Improving the cooldown on Shock lets you kill your primary target faster in just the same way as Shockstrike though, and is more versitile (instant cast vs. 2.5 seconds).

Feat Allocation and Breakdown!

Level 38: Mirrored Iron 1/3. A *very* solid 1 pointer for AOEing. This causes your Protection of Set to occasionally proc ~250 damage on anything that attacks you. Further points only increase the damage dealt by 10% each. (Too bad it’s not +chance to proc by 10%.) A no brainer for fighting lots of mobs at once.

Level 64-67: Mystical Attunment 5/5. More damage to all our spells. No brainer.

Level 63: Purge 1/1. Instant cast, no cooldown, this is a good PVP feat. Many classes can remove your CCs or just simply need to be CCed again to be beaten, and removing the 60 second immunity they gain after your first root lets you throw the other one back on and regain the upper hand. We are very squishy for melee, so CCing them is a high priority. And hey, it’s just one point.

Here is our blank feat tree so you have a point of reference.

Level 58-59: Nothing, save your points.

Level 44-48: Bombardment 5/5. Leaving out the crappy pet age of conan gold and storm chains feats (honestly I think storm chains breaks too easy for any points in improving its damage to be worth it, and you’re going to get the rest of your CC in a few levels), as well as the Shockstrike splash talents, this is all that’s left. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really great talent. Remember when I mentioned pulling more mobs with Shock/Shockstrike? This talent augments that ability perfectly. I’d almost pick it up even earlier if there weren’t other feats to get. If you are single pulling you can get far more casts off than before, and it’s amazing for PVP.

Level 68-69: Unleashed Power 2/2. Some might argue that this spell isn’t needed, but I see it as being useful for those pesky ranged mobs. This will make your “green circle” bigger for SB and IoA, allowing you to more easily include ranged mobs in your AOE while still hitting the melee mobs on you. Getting casters down is a priority after all.

Level 10-14: Swift Shockstrike 5/5. The only option.

Level 33-37: Archmage 5/5. This spell doesn’t affect you quite so much in the 30’s, but very soon you’re going to need it a lot more than the other options. This spell is critical for keeping your IoA and Hellfire Stream damage from degrading as you level.

Level 78-79: Possession 2/2. Basically this spell incapacitates/stuns the enemy for 5 seconds. However, it’s a 5 second channel before it goes off, so using it in the middle of a fight to gain the upper hand is practically worthless. you might use it as an opener to keep the enemy from doing anything for 5 seconds while you wind up on them, that way the channeling is pre-combat. This means you’re not opening with max range Shockstrike though. :/ Alternately in a group this spell becomes more useful since you have teammates to keep killing while you do the channeling and possession.

Level 52-53: Quickened Iron 3/3. Put off filling out Wicked Bolts for now, it’s imperative to stop getting that pesky empty shield debuff! Wicked Bolts is a great spell, but the extra points increase your PVP viability mostly, and this is an AOE build before it’s a PVP build (though I don’t think it’s a gimp PVP build).

Level 24-28: Earth Recharge 5/5. Another amazing AOE grinding regen spell. The mana gained is *very* significant when using our expensive AOE spells.

Level 39: Quickened Iron 1/3. This is where you really start wishing you had more points. You will start noticing a lot more Empty Shield debuffs in the 40’s, which this feat fixes, but because we need to prepare for the best talent in the Havoc tree, filling this feat out is going to have to wait.

(Level 62+ Note: We’re going back to the general tree now, as we have everything in Havoc that helps us AOE. There are several ways you can go about maxing this tree, depending on your focus. I will present one order for points, but you can mix and match to get what you feel necessary first. See discussion in this post.)

Level 62: Mystical Attunment 1/5. More damage, it unlocks the next Tier for us, and the rest of the Shield feats are borderline useless.

Level 60-61: Thunderclap 5/5. You should have 4 points at 60 and get the 5th at 61. This is a HUGE spell in terms of AOE survivability. Maxing it out is a big priority, you should use this spell very often to keep yourself alive against hard hitting pulls.

Level 70-74: Specter Chant 5/5. Another mana talent. With the way our spells’ mana cost tends to skyrocket, and throwing in Lore of Skelos’ increases, you can never have enough mana regen, especially with AOE spells.

(Level 78-80: These talents are mostly throw away. You already have the non-broken and important spells for our class, these are fluff. If Funcom fixes some of our broken talents, these would be the first to go. Especially something like Crimson Shield. If that feat added to the Damage Absorb per hit properly, it would be a MUST HAVE. See discussion in this post.)

Default

Level 49: Nothing, save your feat point for 50, we have 30 points in Havoc now.

Members: Well your members. You are expected to make raids/pvp and pitch in when you can.

Quick Summary

Guild Structure

Initiates: New members to the guild. Generally less then 3 weeks old. In order to make it out of this position you must show that you belong in the guild. This can be done by showing that you have exceptional skills in the game or by stepping up and assisting the guild in various other tasks that are necessary.

Guild Type: We are a mixture of semi-hardcore - hardcore raiding guild with some PvP thrown into the mix.

Assistant Class Officers: There is one assistant class officer per class. Its the same description as above but with slightly less power. The assistant class officer acts as a consultant to the Class Officer. In the absence of the Class officer he/she will take on the full duties of the CO. The ACO is generally selected by the class officer. However it still has to be approved by the gm in order to put the correct person in this position.

Other then Gm of the guild, all officers have not been selected. They will be selected from members within the guild sometime from open beta through a few months into release. I like to get new blood in the mix, although we do bring some extremely experienced officers from other chapters in this guild.

Honor - All members represent Receipt Upon death in and outside of the game. We do not tolerate any in or out of game behavior that doesn’t represent RuD in the proper manner. “Ie flaming on guild sites or the main forum/Repeated slurs against other players.” That doesn’t mean we are clean when we talk, but you know when you cross the line.

RuD Charter

OOR Officers: Depending on the circumstances there are usually a few of these out of raid officers. These officers take care of leading groups of members in harvesting mats to help out the guild. Or by performing other tasks. These players generally are online a decent amount before raids or after raids. It also helps to be very well organized as this positions can sometimes be hard without proper organization.

Website:http://www.ReceiptUponDeath.com

Class Officers: There is one class officer per aoc gold class.”IE Tank, Healers, Offensive Casters, Dps” This officer is expected to have a decent amount of knowledge about their class. The CO is is expected to lead their class during raids. CO’s also give assistance to their class members in making proper decisions on specs, gear, and other areas their members have questions about. During raids the raid leader will give orders to the class leader in which the class leader will setup their class properly for each encounter. The class leader is also responsible to know who has what gear and what spec before each raid. This allows the class leader to make the appropriate decision of who should be in the raid and who shouldn’t. The CO is also a moderator of their own forum. This is an excellent way to give information about strats/items/events for their class. Depending on the looting system the CO generally speaks up for the class on cross class gear. This creates an organized way of distributing cross class items. Cross class gear is usually posted up and the CO’s select what and what not should be looted to his class based on their class members votes. I find that most CO’s who are successful are not only demanding of their class but also make it enjoyable for their class to play. These are usually players who are online a large amount of time or make age of conan gold a large amount of raids. These players also have a in depth knowledge of their class and strats.

Background:

Rud was created by a group of friends a long time ago under various other names. Through the years we have progressed to high end game play. RuD has been competing in professional tourneys for the last 4 years. The core of RuD are hardcore players with some weekend warriors thrown into the mix.

Respect - Our membership is made up of many different personalities and experiences. All members must work to keep the bs to a minimum. All in all officers/gm have the end word which isn’t negotiable.

Server: US- PvE OMM

RuD members are expected to follow these principals:

Gm: This is pretty self explanatory. The gm runs all high level operations of the guild. The gm is also responsible for promotions and removal of guild members.

Friendship - This I believe in strongly. Primarly you are online to have fun and actually progress in the game. I have found over the years players who are lifers in the guild are also players who can get along and who enjoy to play the game as much as everyone else.

First let me start by saying this, we are not a start up guild. We will also not be a zerg guild “100-200 members recruiting as fast as possible no matter the quality”. Our main goal is to bring back the tight nit family guilds used to be. We have been around for a pretty long time and you as a member will see benefits from this immediately. What you will get with the experience of RuD members and officers is a fast paced, well organized, drama free environment. We aim to have a blast while still being able to progress in the game. Our end goal is to run end game raids and have our RuD events (consists of pvp and other fun stuff). Our age restriction is 20+. Like most other high end guilds Vent is required but a mic is optional.

Guild Name: Receipt Upon Death

Application: All applications should be filled out on the RuD forums. Please visit the forums for more information. We are a member reference only guild, however we are accepting applications for a few slots I want filled asap.

Guild Formed: About 9 years ago.

Recruitment: Open Recruitment for AoC

Gm Officers: These two officers are the highest level officers in RuD. These officers are responsible for DKP, Guild Bank, and scheduling raids. After RuD raids a few times these officers will also take control in leading raids. In absence of the GM these officers will control the guild and operations there of until the gm is online. Generally these are players that are online a large amount of time and have extensive knowledge of running raids or have shown the abilities of doing such.

I’ve been level 80 for awhile now (I was one age of conan gold of the first 10 to hit it on my server) and I have seen a lot of people complaining about how effective Rangers are in PVP. I don’t know what game you guys are playing because I completely destroy anyone I come up against 1 on 1 and I figured what better way to energize the Ranger community that make a video of me doing just that.

So here it is:

Hi guys.

I hope you enjoy the movie. There’s no fancy editing or anything but I don’t think that that subtracts from the overall quality. Afterall, the best WoW PVP movies (at least that I enjoyed) were raw arena matches.

I really think I have completely mastered the Ranger class age of conan gold and I think on watching it you will agree.

http://files.filefront.com/slappywag…/fileinfo.html (also has a Filefront stream, though it’s pretty low quality. Just download it, it’s only 65mb)

Basically I just made this movie from a couple of clips in only like 1 day of PVP — but the clips are such high quality that I don’t think you’ll be able to tell. Unfortunately it’s all been filimed in Khesh since that’s pretty much the only place where 80 v 80 world PVP occurs atm =(

18. DOTs - Significantly increase Ranger DOTs of all types.

2. Out Of Range Indicators - Make the combos red until we get in range or something to let us know.

4. Tracking - The marker on the minimap sometimes aoc gold doesn’t show up at all. It rarely ever shows up on the large map as well.

These are just the most common requests for the class. Not everyone is going to agree on these.

5. Shattering Shots - Does not currently affect shield placement as the tooltip suggests. It has no effect at the moment.

15. Marked For Death - return it to its previous form before the 6/2/08 patch

3. Mountaineer - Only activates when you changes zones and deactivates when you die. There is no visible benefit for the second level of this feat.

6. Tracking - There is no way to distinguish between enemy and ally. Guild members, team members, raid members and enemies all look the same on the list.

12. Climbing - should not break stealth.

7. More versatile traps - snares, debuffs, etc.

2. ALL ATTACKS - Ranged attacks seem to have an inordinately high chance to be blocked/parried/dodged both in PvP and PvE (seems to be the case for just about every player attack). NEWS: Famine actually responded and said they are looking into this!! LINK

3. Salvo - Does not receive damage bonuses from stances.

6. Bleeding Puncture - Rank 2 cooldown is 15 seconds instead of 10 like the other ranks.

2. Damage Decrease? - Multiple reports of people saying their damage has been decreased in various situations.

4. Grievous Injury - Applies a buff to a nonexistent feat called “Shrapnel” instead of to its prerequisite “Hail of Fire”.

8. Distraction - Refreshes itself every 5 minutes and the target cannot remove it if they choose.

4. Range - This is controversial depending on the Ranger you ask.

17. Splintering Puncture Feat - Make it passive.

Other Bugs

1. Gear/Feats - Needs to give detailed information regarding stats and damage. The tooltips currently give vague information like “increased damaged” instead of “5% increase in damage”

4. Quivers sell for 1 Tin regardless of level.

1. Shattering Stance - The proc rate for the effects tied to Shattering Stance has been decreased. This has been confirmed.

13. Crosshair Color - The ability to change the color would be nice. White is hard to see on beaches and snow, etc.

Coming soon.

5. Tracking - If you’re on a mountain or below one, it seems to calculate the incline/decline as your total meters.

3. Bug: Attacks are being dodge, blocked and parried a lot more frequently than usual.

11. Running - Should use a set amount of stamina instead of a percentage.

14. Targeting System - There are times when tab tageting that the arrow does now hit the target, but just flies into the air.

19. Piercing Wounds - Change it to ADD 125% instead of scaling it to 125%. It currently only adds 5 points of damage.

6/2/08 Patch

1. Crossbow Specialization Feat - Damage bonus reduced by 50% on all ranks

1. ALL COMBOS Combos have a decent chance of simply “fanning” going through the animation and costing the Ranger stamina, but not actually affecting the target.

4. Piercing Shots - Then first rank does more damage than the second. The fourth rank also does more than the fifth. Lower ranks are better than higher ranks.

4. Jesus Stance - Sniper stance allows you to walk on water and shoot people from underwater. SOLUTION: By fixing it so that you no longer kneel, this doesn’t work any longer.

These are in no particular order. It is safe to assume that the ones closer to the top of the list are considered more of a priority though.

2. Salvo - If you move in between the shots, it resets the damage to before you started firing. The enemy regails all health lost from the combo as well. This can also occur when you are knocked back, stunned, etc. Basically, any type of interruption to the combo will cause this to happen.

1. ALL ATTACKS - Ranged attacks seem to have an inordinately high chance to be blocked/parried/dodged both in PvP and PvE (seems to be the case for just about every player attack).

16. Fire Trap - Increase damage. It does very little damage for a high level feat.

Bugs That Have Been Fixed

5. Aiming - Arrows are sent where you were aiming when you pressed the button, not when you released the bow string. This makes it much harder to ‘lead’ a target.

2. Stealth - Necromancer & Demonologist pets can still attack and follow you when you stealth. This is a PvP breaking issue.

2. We cannot wear all cloth armor. It seems all cloth armor above level 70 is red for our class.

3. Level 80 rare quivers have melee modifiers instead of ranged.

Feats

4. Bug: Combos are completing but not actually causing any damage.

3. Stealthed Mezz Shot - Sometimes it adds damage to the shot and immediately breaks the effect. To fix this, fire the Mezz Shot and then move immediately. It will apply the effect, but not fire the arrow that causes the damage. You can also wait for the first arrow to fire before pressing the upper left attack instead of trying to queue the attacks all at once.

6/23/08

3. All Stances - Character drops to one knee and cannot perform combos because character is too low to the ground. You have to jump just the right way for skills to work. This works sometimes and sometimes it does not work at all, which forces you to go into melee combat. To fix this, apply the stance while not in combat and make sure your weapon is sheathed. You can also change zones/instances and it will be fixed. SOLUTION: You no longer kneel when in a stance.

9. Range Adjustments - for higher ground. Shooting from a wall/tower is next to impossible at this point.

6. Quick Switch - from 1st to 3rd person switch hotkey

6/16/08

Combos

3. Stealth & Rest - Cannot stealth or rest while any member of the party is in combat.

2. Bow Specialization Feat - Damage bonus reduced by 50% on all ranks

These lists include some issues that are not only specific to Rangers, but every issue on these lists do affect Rangers.

6/12/08

1. Blue quivers and level 80 quivers do not show up on traders, limiting our gear selection.

2. Height Advantage - You cannot shoot targets from a location where they cannot reach you even if you have a clear shot. They will constantly evade.

UPDATED 6/23/08

Bugs

Changes That Were Not In Patch Notes

6. Line of Sight - Unable to shoot over small obstacles like keep towers.

Combat

Nothing to note.

1. ALL COMBOS Combos have a decent chance of simply “fanning” going through the animation and costing the Ranger stamina, but not actually affecting the target.

3. Tracking - If you attempt to use tracking immediately after it cools down, it will give you a message that says the ability is not ready yet and the cooldown timer will start over.

TOP 3 BUGS WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE FIXED

2. Level 30 Destiny Quest - Bugged if you try and accept it with a full quest log. SOLUTION: Fixed the issue.

5. Hotkeys - Need keys to switch hotbars when changing from melee to ranged

This thread will list where to find some of the best HoX gear as we progress through the game. The database will have, as they become available, item locations and stats. I’m going to try to restrict this list to items of Blue quality or better (levels 1-19 excluded). That said, there are definitely times in your progression where Green or even White vendor items will actually yield higher DPS. This list will only improve if people contribute, so please post whatever you have. Please note DPS numbers are approximate - they are affected by level and other equipped gear.

Vashian Schenti - +71 Max Stamina, +4.4 Dexterity, +6 Hiding, +0.1% Crushing Invulnerability, +3.6 Defense Rating, +0.2 Heroic Def - Princess Akivasha, Sanctum of the Burning Souls

Player crafted items and random green or blue drops often will fill out many of your equipment slots. I am currently under the opinion that +2h Edged Dmg is the most important stat. The keyword, when searching vendors for this gear, is Scything.

Currently, crafted armor’s gem slots aren’t functioning, and won’t until FC decides to fix it. At least, they are broken on anything I can make (lv 40/50 armor). While crafted armor DOES give significant defense rating bonuses far above and beyond other armor of the same level, the game caps your defense rating at an absurdly low number per level. If you put on a Quilted Robe (lv 50 crafted), you will probably more than max out your defense rating from that alone. It reads something like (in white) 230(242), meaning you WOULD have 242 defense rating, but the game is limiting you to 230 because of your class/level.

Lamentatus - 130.6 DPS, +8.7 Str, +52 Dmg (magic), +33 Fire Dmg (magic) - Onyx

Bloodtainted Hoop - +5.1 Constitution, +5.1 Intelligence, +4.8 Fire Damage (magic), +4.8 Unholy Damage (magic) - Ancient Blood Defiler, Sanctum of the Burning Souls

Vyre - 62.6 DPS, +2% Fatality Chance, +4.4 Strength, +0.2% Tap Health, +0.4% Tap Stamina - Acheronian Warlord, Sanctum of the Burning Souls

Luctus - 64.7 DPS, +2% Fatality Chance, +4.6 Strength, +1.4 Slashing Damage - Final reward for completing Captain Falco’s quests in the Tarantia Noble District.

Kurbankohl’s Anguish - 97.8 dps, +2% fatality, +3 damage (melee) age of conan gold , +0.4% health tap, +0.7% stamina tap - Drops in the level 60 destiny quest private instance from the optional boss, Kurbankohl. There is a random chance for any kind of weapon to drop.

If you want to save up gems for when the slots do work, I still wholeheartedly believe that +2h edged damage is the best possible stat. The gems which can be cut for this stat (still random chance) are, in order of rank: Spinel (40), Jasper (50), Garnet (60), Blood Opal (70), Ruby (75), Star Ruby (80).

Keen Claidhmore - 52.1 DPS, +2% Fatality Chance, +3.2 Strength, +1.8 Damage (melee) - Random world drop from Ymir.

Now please don’t pull the “you suck” or, “you don’t know how to play your class” posts. I’ve been MTing in games since the original EQ. I love tanking, i’m good at ‘hopping in and out of 2h/dw’ for knockdowns and what not with 2h, i just simply can’t take the hits.

Edit: Guess i should also say that im a DW spec. I do again do ‘hop in and out of dw/2h’ so i can still use 2h knockdowns and what not to give heals time to catch up. Still just doesn’t seem to matter much.

Well, im 65 on my conq, and i think im at the point where its time to roll a guardian.

Anybody else experienced the same thing?

Edit 3: Changed the term stance dancing to be more accurate. Since people can’t seem to see the inferrance in a sentence any more and it seems you have to draw a picture and ****ing color it before they get the point.

Again, i want to stress, this post has no bearing on PVP whatsoever, this is strictly from a PVE stand point, i have no intention of ever PVPing, i just want a class that can MT, and it looks like i’m going to HAVE to play a guardian to be succesful at that.

I’m lucky if i can stay alive (thats with multiple healers) age of conan gold on equal or +1/+2 level boss mobs. Add in a second or third mob and i’ll go down so quick its not even funny.

I know gear isn’t a problem as i’m in almost all blues (only gloves are not blue) that i have picked specifically to focus on adding +resistance to crushing/slashing/etc etc. I’ve got improved defensive stance so it adds the resistances and the health regen, it just doesn’t seem to matter. Caster mobs are definitely the worst, melee mobs im generally ok with if aoc gold its not multiples.

Maybe this was my mistake (correct me if i’m wrong). But the way i understood it was that FC’s intention was that all 3 of the soldier classes would be able to tank, but guardians would be the best at it. Right now i just can’t tank multiple mobs to save my life, which means im pretty much useless as an MT since CC doesn’t really exist in this game.

Edit 2: Yes, i do use pots on any and all boss fights.

Two other areas that you will still want to heavily invest skill points into are bandaging and mana attractor. Bandaging will cut down your downtime immensely since we are not a healing class and often if you are pulling only a few mobs at a time, you should never have to rest. Mana attractor improves your regen rate. I personally never ever run out of mana unless it’s a aoc gold sustained fight in a group. Fatalities and maxing your points in the right area make it nearly impossible.

The two main components of your skill age of conan gold points are mana renew and casting concentration. You can’t afford to be interrupted, that is our life and blood, so casting concentration should always be maxed. If anyone knows if you receive a positive benefit with overmaxing points (710/650) please post or PM me. The other point you want maxed is mana renew.

Max:

Casting Concentration

Heavily Fill:

Mana Renew

After that you are on your own. I usually keep around 100 points in hide and then another 100 or so points in various ares. I do this in case I need to reset them and put them into climbing to achieve a quest, or various other needs.
